Professor Kathy Rowan
Intensive Care National Audit & Research Centre (ICNARC), UK
Kathy is a health services researcher who, in 1994 as a result of her Ph.D at the University of Oxford, established a charity (not-for-profit organisation) called the Intensive Care National Audit & Research Centre (ICNARC). Kathy established ICNARC (www.icnarc.org) as a sister, but independent, organisation to the Intensive Care Society (the professional organisation for clinicians working in UK critical care).
ICNARC’s aim is to facilitate improvements in the organisation and practice of critical care (intensive and high dependency care) to improve patient care and outcomes through a broad programme of comparative audit, methodological and evaluative research. ICNARC currently has a £5 million research portfolio including three randomised and two non-randomised studies, plus one methodological study. Kathy co-directs ICNARC, leading on strategy and science, and works with a team of 25 audit, research, IT and administrative staff.
In 2004, Kathy was awarded the Humphry Davy Medal by the Royal College of Anaesthetists in the UK as a mark of distinction for her significant contribution to the College and to critical care. Kathy completed a year’s Harkness Fellowship in Health Care Policy in the USA between November 2004 and October 2005. Kathy is an Honorary Professor in the Department of Public Health and Policy at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
Kathy regularly plays 5-a-side football and is, most importantly, a Liverpool Football Club supporter!
